April 2017 – Introduction to Permaculture Workshop

Date: 29th to 30th April 2017
Venue: Tir na nOg, Ballyhaunis, Mayo
Price: €100 for the 2 day course, including lunch and unlimited hot drinks.Permaculture Smallholding Ireland

We filled the first and second Intro to Permaculture course so we’re now running a third one by popular demand! (See some pics of our first course here!)

2 Day Introduction to Permaculture Course here with Hannah Mole, focusing on creative solutions for the kind of marginal land and environment we have here in the West of Ireland (you know, over a metre of rain a year, acid soil… windy!).

The course is based around practical activities supported by short, focused theoretical sessions to help you gain a good understanding of how to apply permaculture to our unique climate and landscape. A hands on, Action-led, ‘Perma-blitz’ style workshop where you will learn about Permaculture; the ethics and principles of Permaculture Design, how to approach laying out a site, and practical applications onsite including: Wind and Water management (how to design wind breaks and swales), Introduction to Food Forests, Extending the growing seasons, Composting Systems, Polycultures and Guilds, and no-dig gardening.

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in Permaculture, and how you can apply it to marginal land to create sustainable abundance. No prior permaculture or gardening knowledge is required for this course.

What is this ‘Action-led learning’ craic?
Being outside, getting guided hands-on experience in the field, instruction, the opportunity to do the task at hand, asking questions ‘on the job’, absorbing the knowledge & skills in a very practical way, being empowered by physically doing… Listening, Doing, Questioning & Reflecting.

So, please note, this is a very out-door, practical course! Bring boots, wellies, and warm, waterproof clothing (just in case!). Expect at least 75% hands-on learning in the garden.

**To enable effective facilitation of this type of learning there is a maximum of 10 participants so please do let us know as soon as possible if you are intending to join**

Cost:

The course costs €100 for 2 days which includes an abundance of hot drinks and snacks and a hot lunch on both days, using fresh ingredients from the garden.

Also included are course notes, and camping/parking space for anyone who wishes to stay over. (There are also other accommodation options; B&B’S, Hotel etc in the area and we also have a yurt, bell tent and caravan for rent here at Tir Na nOg. Please enquire about availability)

The venue, Tir Na nOg, is a permaculture smallholding project located 5 minutes from Ballyhaunis in County Mayo. As well as an acre and a half of land that has lain fallow for 20 years there is also a 400 year old cottage under renovation using natural building methods. Full directions will be sent with booking confirmation.
